Sleepless Nights

Sleepless Nights   There was a time that I considered sleepless nights a curse. Sleep was an escape from the mortal coil. A temporary reprieve from the consciousness that inflicts us all. In sleep there was comfort. Trapped in a state between life and death where the mind powered down and the body allowed itself to recharge, there was little that could disturb me.    How long has it been now since the insomnia began? Before the slaughter, that much is certain. Had I still the heart to sleep at that age, I might have been kinder to the man who game me my eyes. Before the surgeries even. These cloudy windows into my soul matched the person I was by that time. Were I not already so drained and broken, how could I be resurrected as Frankenstein's Monster? Perhaps I never truly slept through a night. I only have a dream of sleep. Some artificial concept of human rest.    I take a swig of the clear liquid in my glass and feel it burn all the way down my throat. Before it warms my chest t

Interim 2: The Sheep Descends With The Eagles Content Warnings: Child Abuse, Murder   The rumbling of the earth was all The Sheep heard in his ears. He consciously ceased the sh

Chapter 4 - The Neon Gods We Made Content Warnings: Suicide, Depression   The life of a Legatus doesn't tend to stick to a fixed routine. In The Legion (the military police of The Republic) Legati are second only to the Praetor themselves who oversees every division and precinct. The Praetor reports directly to the Senate and is given Supreme authority on how to handle individual cases and threats. It's an incredible amount of pressure and responsibility that most people, seasoned veterans all, only take on for 3-4 years.    Praetor Chroma was not most people. She had served as Praetor for 13 years, beginning as one of the youngest to take the rank in her 40s. During her time, The Republic had faced various new threats from both inside and outside her borders, especially with recent diplomatic tensions between other mega-cities and bio-domes. Throughout it all, she had brought a calming and dignified presence as the face and brain of The Legion.    The sun is only just rising
